5 Tips to Optimize Your EntreCard Time

January 21st, 2008 · 10 Comments

It seems every blog that runs EntreCard has a list of tips to gain more EntreCardcredits. So it would be like flogging a dead horse for me to do a post on EntreCard tips.

That is why this post is on getting the most out of the time you invest into EntreCard. For those of you who do not know, EntreCard is a way of attracting traffic to your blog. It works like the business cards of the past. For more information on EntreCard and why you should look into it read my post here.

  1. Use a RSS reader and subscribe to the feed for your card drops. This allows you to view all your card drops at the end of the day and return the favor by dropping cards on those sites. Doing this all at one time saves you more time then checking randomly through out the day and returning the card drops.
  2. Use the Favorites feature in EntreCard to single out places where you want to advertise. This way when you go to do an ad campaign you can look to see if the blogs you want to advertise on are available.
  3. Set a time limit for how much time you’ll spend card dropping and browsing sites. I set this at around one hour. This gives me ample time to send thank you notes to both those who have bought ads from and those who I have bought ads from. Now you could just use a form letter and copy and paste which would save you more time. But I prefer the personal touch.
  4. Lets face it there are going to be some sites you’ll want to frequent every day. You can do this by subscribing to their feeds. Or what I do is book mark them in FireFox and put them all in the same folder. Then I can click on that folder and have FireFox open all the sites in individual tabs. As I drop my card and or leave my comments on the new post I close the tab. Again I do this with in the time limit I have set for EntreCard that day.
  5. Start your ad campaigns and approve the ads purchased for site first thing in the day. I have noticed that price to advertise on my blog will always be cheaper first thing in the morning. This rings true for other blogs as well. I know it is tempting to approve ad requests all day. But if you do them all at one time it will end up- costing you less time.

EntreCard is a great system and has brought my blog a lot of traffic and many RSS subscribers. The only draw back is it does cost a bit of your time. I hope these five tips will help you save a bit of time while using EntreCard. Time to me is my most valuable commodity. I never seem to have enough and I can’t replace what I have used of it. If you have some EntreCard time saving suggestions please leave them in the comments.

I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.

    Some good tips Ben!
I didn’t know that I could subscribe to the feed for my card drops!

For the most sites which I visit I have two different approaches:

The ones that might get handy in time –> I subscribe to there feeds, which I’ll check one or two time a week. Maybe more, maybe less, depends on the time.

And the ones called my favorites–> This is when I use the same approach as you! Bookmarking them, open all tabs in firefox, see, comment and leave! ;)

I stick with the ones I already have in my reader and drop some odd cards along the road and on the ones I like which dropped one at my doorstep.

I don’t want to get too pricey ;)

(And you might wanna redo your first sentence *grin*)

Setting a time limit is definitely important. As with all (marketing) efforts, one can always go overboard.

The saved time can go to writing up a fantastic blog post!

Another tip, I say self-reflexively, “Try to comment on people’s blogs.”

Commenting on peoples blog just for the sake of commenting is a lost cause. But if you have something relevant to say then say it. I know most bloggers, myself included, like to get comments and even suggestions for improvements.
So far on my last few posts Nicole has kindly pointed out some of my English flaws. Pretty incredible really, as I don’t think English is her first language.

    Vincent,
I have to set time limits on virtually everything I do. Even when I code now I set a timer to go off after 25 minutes so I remember to take a five minute break. However when coding I find it really easier to go past my x hour time limit. I get so engrossed the rest of the world does not exist.

MY problem is sticking tot he time limit. I get so sucked into doing 300 drops a day so I can set up massive ad campaigns. I have found that changing your ad is a way to keep it fresh as well.

You need to have discipline to stick to the time limit. I am currently in the process of redesigning my EntreCard ad. But unfortunately it does not list high on my priorities of things to accomplish.

Great ideas I’ll definetly take into consideration favorting my most used blogs. I don’t think having an rss feeder would work, because I don’t check it enough.
