Leaving the Evilness of FaceBook

You may remembering my post FaceBook is pure evil that I deactivated my Facebook account. Now when one deactivates their account you would tend to think that all your information would be deleted. Not so with FaceBook.

All your messages, the stuff on your fun wall, super, wall your photos etc. are still there available to other FaceBook users. FaceBook maintains this is so you can seamlessly reactivate your account when you decided to go back to FaceBook. Lately this little feature of FaceBook has been prevalent in the news. Many newscasters referring to it like the song Hotel California “You can check out, but you can never leave.”.

So what can you do to get out? Well if you are like me and have already deactivated your account you have to reactivate it. Go in and line by line delete all the information in your profile. Delete all the applications that you may have signed up for such as Fun Wall and Super Wall. Delete all your inbox and sent messages, delete all the photos you may have uploaded. Once you have done all that deleting once again deactivate your account.

But your presence is still not completely gone. Facebook maintains back ups of this information on its servers. In order to have this removed you must e-mail FaceBook. From what I have read this is no easy process, and some people have even resorted to legal action in order to get themselves removed. Do you need more proof that FaceBook is evil?

I have an account on Facebook also, but the last time I logged in was a month ago! So I never use it, and I was thinking about deactivating my account, but after reading this post I don’t think that I’m going through so many troubles before deactivating my account.. I’m just going to let it be the way it is.. I mean, it doesn’t bother me and I don’t care if my information will be still visible to other users! ;)

I have a Facebook account as well, but I rarely even log in. I haven’t found it to be much use - except for giving me a ton of email from local guys trying to find a girl to hook up with. And I’m definitely not interested in the guys hanging out on Facebook. I’ve been thinking of deleting my account for a while. Thanks for the tips!

Thanks also for your comment on my Entrecard post! I hope I’ll see the same kind of results you’re seeing on a daily basis. My ads are just starting to run.

    Have a great day!

Well I am kind of hypocritical on the FaceBook thing. Although I don’t use FaceBook anymore, I have just finished authoring an application for it.
But I can see your point. If you had yourself listed as a single female I am sure you’d have an endless stream of guys trying to hook up with you. Fortunately for me ,an ugly male, I never had that problem.

Ben, just what are you talking about? I checked your About page, and you’re a handsome man! :) Very nice summary of your professional background by the way, but why is it that you’ve included very little about the other areas of your life? How about letting us know a little more about what makes you you?

Tish, those pictures are from when I was young, and not suffering from the ravages of time. ;)
You wouldn’t want to see me now. But thanks for the compliment. What other areas of my life would you like to know about? I am really a pretty boring kind of guy.

Reminds me of the yahoo / flickr mashup bull**** where after deleting my account thumbnails from some private pictures were available.
    Sigh…..
It’s all gone now, but it can take up to 6 months for their cache to be cleaned….

    @Tish
    I feel your pain.
I made the mistake and put my location in there.
    Not very smart.
But the email infos go right in my spam folder now and I haven’t logged in for months ;)

I read about this Facebook thing. I hate Facebook anyway and never use it unless a friend forces me to. You are right about getting rid of everything before deactivating the account. Yes the info is still on their servers.
But I think this fault of Facebook is getting about and I saw a very recent post about Facebook having egg on their faces, but as I knew that :) I didn’t read it. Maybe it’s about the privacy problem.
Another thing they did was ignore copyright on Scrabble. That was the only application I was interested in.

Facebook is evil- the way they are selling their database is total evil. I hate all those applications and pokes and wish they would leave me alone instead of stuffing my inbox with requests to join 101 things. Since most people don’t even know they are sending you this crap, I decided to just no log in anymore.

If you don’t want to go thru the deleting process, just put in fake info on some lines … to throw off the identity thieves.

I had no idea that they did this kind of crap!
Fortunately for me I’ve always stayed away from posting anything on Facebook or even Myspace.

Are any of the other profile sites like this? (Myspace , Orkut?)

Kids today need to learn this when they are creating these fun pages with their friends. Eventually they will want to get a job and this info will still be available for these potential employers to view. Post only what you want to always be available!

It does sound evil indeed, very Google-ish behaviour. I don’t like or use Facebook much although I have an account. It seems kind of pointless to me. It’s just another layer of silliness in methods of communication.

I like Facebook. It lets me connect to my high school and college friends from Toronto.

People tend to start “hating” it because of the Beacon fiasco.

Thank you Rudy - I was worried I was going to be the only pro-Facebook voice. I think it is great. I never put anything on there that I wouldn’t want others to see. I am not big on applications but the number of old friends that have contacted me that there is no other way I would have been in contact with makes it worth it. I don’t even have a problem with them trying to make some money off it - I mean hell, I’m on there every few days and they haven’t got a red cent from me! Then again - MySpace? Ugh.
